Serving up Snark

I’m a sarcastic son-of-a-bitch, so I can’t really criticize anyone else for being a cynical asshole. Something tells me that it’s not the best campaign strategy, though.

CNN anchor Bill Schneider, stunned, responded thusly:

You just heard something remarkable from Senator Clinton a moment ago. She was actually mocking Senator Obama

She seems to have thrown good sense to the wind and is going negative hard in the final weeks before Ohio and Texas. She could have kept running a solid campaign and then bowed out gracefully, salvaging an even more impressive political career. Instead, she seems to have decided to go scorched-earth in these final weeks.

What happened to her lovey-dovey, unified Democratic party, lets-get-along attitude in the debates on Tuesday?

And, you know, no matter what happens in this contest — and I am honored, I am honored to be here with Barack Obama. I am absolutely honored. Whatever happens, we’re going to be fine.

Yeah, Hillary’s a real ray of sunshine . . .

Obama, Clinton tussle over negative ads

Hillary Clinton seemed furious yesterday, as she criticized a negative campaign flyer distributed by the Obama campaign in Ohio.

Mike argues for Hillary’s side in the post below. In order to keep this from spiraling into a massive front-page posting war, I posted my rebuttal in the comments of Mike’s post. Be sure to read the whole thing, in order to get both sides of the story, and leave your comments there.

Obama’s short-sighted attack on Universal Healthcare

I support Hillary because I think she understands the policy issues better than most, including Obama. I also think that when push comes to shove she is the one who can deliver on the very issues that are important for me including universal health care, ending the war in Iraq, and standing up for the middle class.

I don’t begrudge Obama’s resume or his legislative accomplishments. I simply think that when push comes to shove Hillary’s experience and track record on the issues is more impressive. There isn’t a state in the union that hasn’t been affected by her legislative accomplishments. The scope of her accomplishments on the issues has had real and lasting effect on almost every American from health care and women’s right to choose to civil rights and equity for all.

Now, we all know that Senator Obama has been something of a political rock star and his campaign for the presidency has taken a quick and high rise towards the most powerful office in the world. Obama has been riding on a movement driven by his message to unite the country and to bring change. But as we all know it takes a lot more than just being able to get yourself elected (and everyday it seems more evident that Obama is going to do just that) to be able to govern. After it’s all said and done, as Obama often likes to remind us, words really do matter. And the words that are going to come back to haunt all of us who are in favor of universal health care are the ones that he has recycled in a short-sighted attack ad against Hillary’s universal health care plan.

UT Student Paper Endorses Clinton

The Daily Texan student newspaper is apparently miffed by Obama’s snubb of the paper during the debate. The student paper at UT-Austin has endorsed Hillary Clinton. The UT Daily outlined the following major reasons for their endorsement of Hillary over Obama:

  1. Clinton, as a seasoned politician, is the best person to clean up the mess after Bush
  2. Obama snubbed the daily by saying he had every major newspaper endorsement in Texas (UT Daily had not endorsed yet - which you would think if Obama would be sensitive to given he was at UT!)
  3. The Obama campaign was not as sympathetic as Hillary’s campaign to calls for increasing number of students seats at the UT-Austin debate
  4. The country needs a proven steady hand to manage transition from the Bush years as opposed to an untested agent of hope and inspiration

The endorsement is hardly as good as other newspapers and it makes me wonder if it’s sort of a ploy on the board’s part for attention or purposeful attempt at false praise. Either way it’s clear the UT student population has had a strong reaction to the endorsement.

Friday Links

  • A quick and dirty analysis, along with a fantastic graph, shows that heavily Hispanic counties are not seeing the same levels of early voting increases as the rest of the state. It’s hard not to imagine that this hurts Clinton.
  • Some more impressive number crunching predicts that Texas will end in a draw
  • Ron Paul, 10-term congressman from south Texas, withdrew from the presidential campaign trail because he was facing a serious primary challenge in his home district. Now, his opponent, Chris Peden, has picked up some major newspaper endorsements. Peden is a conservative republican, naturally, so the voters have a choice between bat-shit crazy and slightly less bat-shit crazy. (I’ll let you decide which is which).

Bill Clinton’s University of Houston Rally Speech

I had some technical difficulty getting this video to you sooner but here we go. President Clinton had a smaller crowd gathered at the Hoffeinz Pavilion, but that allowed me to video record the first 10 minutes of his speech from up close. After the endorsement by Chris Bell, Clinton was introduced and he came on stage and thanked all the dignitaries. Here are the videos I got from a digital camera.
