San Antonio Express-News, El Paso Times endorse Obama
On the heels of this weekend’s primary and caucus sweep, Obama earned the endorsement of newspapers in two important markets — San Antonio (60% hispanic in city, 50% in metro) and El Paso (76% in city.) Both editorial endorsements accept Obama’s message of Hope and Unity as their basis:
America needs a president that tries to create unity out of diversity, marshalling all the forces — red, blue or purple — that make this country great. Sen. Barack Obama is the Democratic candidate that offers the best chance to reach that lofty objective.
The rivals differ little when it comes to their positions [....] But the main difference comes down to approach. Obama expresses a message of hope that emphasizes what is good for the country, not the party.
A weary America, tired of the status quo, fed up with business as usual, is longing for a positive change — and Barack Obama is that change.
Of the two viable Democratic presidential candidates, Obama represents a fresh future rather than an inevitable harking back to the past — what was a divisive and contentious past for many.
IVR Polls from last year — predating Obama’s ascent to the front of the contest — had Hillary running far ahead in TX, 51-17, and almost uncontested 70-7 among hispanics. But Obama’s momentum has closed this to 48-38 as of Jan 30, with 60-29 among hispanics.Today’s Obama endorsement in these particular markets could be particularly valuable. Houston remains the largest market in Texas without a major paper endorsing Obama. Is the Houston Chronicle next?
